Wednesday Side Note: Appendectomy, Hitters' Version of Tommy John Surgery

The Cardinals nation held their collective breath last Friday when they found out Matt Holliday had had an appendectomy performed.  Initial fears can be put to rest as Matty H will make a full recovery and he has already been cleared for baseball activities.  There is no clear time table for his return, but he should avoid a trip to the DL.  It sounds like he will be ready to go as early as this weekend or the start of next week.  And it couldn't come at a better time as the Cards are having a bit of trouble getting the offense going in the early part of the season.

Meanwhile on Tuesday a few hours south of Saint Louis in Kansas City visiting White Sox homerun masher Adam Dunn was rushed to the hospital for an emergency appendectomy.  It is still early but the Sox are hopeful that he can return in about the same time frame as is expected from Holliday.

2 MLB superstars playing in Missouri need emergency appendectomies only a week a part.  What are they putting in the water over there?  Well of course it has nothing to do with the water and thinking so is just plain silly.  Cleary the only logical explanation is that this is a conspiracy of sorts orchestrated by the Midwest medical community to raise awareness of appendicitis and other digestive disorders.  Well their scheme has worked, and I now know more about having an inflamed appendix than I did before last week.  If you want to learn more about the disorder, here you go!

In all seriousness I hope that each Holliday and Dunn can make a full and speedy recovery.  Holliday is a key part of the Cardinals offense, and Dunn is a key part of my fantasy team offense.  Lets hope that this is the last case we hear of emergency appendectomy, because I always accidentally put an "i" in appendectomy and I am tired of correcting the error.

  1. All of a sudden 2 big time hitters have appendectomies?? Time to have an open discussion about why. The truth is neither player went under the knife. After checking medical files with area personnel, it seems neither holliday or dunn had surgury. Then why would both teams and the mlb say they did?

Remember in recent years the mlb has tried to clean up their image from the steriod era. During the past couple of years big names have not been suspended 50 games for drug use. Rather minor league no names have been suspended. The last 2 big names were arod and manny-2 controversal figures. Holliday and dunn are "good guys", right? Fact is both failed drug tests during the off-season. Rather than suspend these players and cast a black cloud over the mlb, league officals cut deals and sent them away with "surgeries" early during the season. Baseball is a business and they need the cards and white sox to sell tickets and be good. Suspending these players 50 games is bad business.
